Jack and Jill thread on reddit
A really interesting thread on reddit about Jack and Jill, the new Adam Sandler vehicle.
SOME BACKGROUND
J&J has been given 4% on Rotten Tomatoes, 2.8/10 on imdb (7x the score!), generally PANNED by everyone.
The thread is “Does Sandler realise that his movies are shit? Does he care?”
A very valid point, every film Adam Sandler has made has been terrible. A quick audit shows Sandler’s films to have an average rating of 32% on rotten tomatoes. Removing the outliers, this goes down to 31% i.e. FACTS. He’s made shitloads, most of which i’ve never seen (Punch Drunk Anger Management, You Don’t Mess With The Spanglish).
Also starring in J&J is Al Pacino. Pacino’s previous lowest-rated film is Gigli, the infamous J-Lo and Ben Affleck turkey that if you haven’t seen it oh my days get a copy it’s very terrible and funny. Pacino pops up! Possibly as a favour to Director Christopher Brest, who got him an oscar for Scent of a Woman.
Anyhoo, the reddit thread is interesting for one follow-up comment:
“Honestly, see the movie. It’s excruciatingly painful. But the last 60 seconds of the movie will explain everything to you. It completely sums up everything and suddenly turns the movie into a goddamn masterpiece.”
The last lines are something like this:
Jack and Al Pacino have just finished watching a Dunkin Donuts commercial that mercilessly mocks Pacino’s glorious career.
Jack: What did you think?
Pacino: You have to burn this.
Jack: What?
Pacino: Nobody can see this. It is the worst thing I have ever seen. Nobody would even PAY to see this. I refuse to believe anyone would stoop this low.
Jack: Yeah you’re right.
Credits roll.
And that’s it. That’s the whole fucking point of the movie. Adam Sandler made the WORST GODDAMN MOVIE OF ALL TIME, fully knowing what he was doing. And America still paid MILLIONS of dollars to see it.
Adam Sandler is the greatest troll of all time.”
Here’s the clip. Certainly not the greates troll of all time (hello Bloodninja), but an excellent piece of post-modern silliness.
Subnote:
Everyone has a favourite Sandler film, even if they hate him. Mine’s Happy Gilmore, followed by Wedding Singer and The Waterboy.
